TF101 not charging properly - seems to trickle charge when tablet is off??

Hi everyone, this is my first post so I'll try and explain it as best I can!

I just bought a TF101 off ebay, with the keyboard dock. The guy I bought it from had left some of his apps etc on, so I decided to do a factory reset so I could start from scratch. Afterwards, I tried charging the tablet and realised the battery level wasn't increasing. It doesn't recognise that the charger is plugged into the tablet and turned on either.

So, I went on the old internet and tried looking for a solution. I found a lot of people on different forums talking about problems with charging the TF101, so I tried the different solutions people stated (like putting the wall charger in the freezer for half an hour, doing a hard reset, and trying another factory reset).

Unfortunately none of these worked, so I decided to plug the charger directly into my laptop and leave it overnight (as I saw someone had said their TF101 had trickle charged overnight). I tried this a low and behold, it worked. I tried the same with the wall charger, and that worked too.

Now, I did some "debugging": I tried my phone charger cable plugged into the asus wall charger, and it charged up fine. I then tried the asus cable in another USB wall charger to charge my tablet, and that didnt work. But I when I plug the tablet into my laptop, the computer recognises it, and the tablet can be trickle charged, so surely its not the wall charger or the cable?

Personally, I think the factory reset must've changed some system files that then stops the tablet from being charged whilst being on, although I don't exactly know how this would work! Another thing that I forgot to mention was that I also have the keyboard dock, which has similar problems with charging as well! I don't seem to be having much luck with my first tablet...

If anyone could be of help that'd be great, I don't really know that much about the android OS so if its a technical thing please be patient with me! Thanks

It doesn't surprise me that the wall warts you tried from different devices did not charge your tablet. Most phones etc only use 5V to charge, the transformer uses 15V to charge, so a standard USB port will only trickle charge as you found (as well as other wall warts for phones etc). It is quite common for the wall wart to stop working and when it does, it just goes without any signs. You should be able to find a wall wart that will output the needed 15V (2A I think) to charge the tablet. I would start there.

I'll look into that, although i heard that if you plug the tablet into a usb3.0 port that it'll charge as normal. I tried this with my laptop and only managed the trickle charge. I'm still sure that its because of the factory reset I carried out, but i can't be sure!

No, the factory reset should have nothing to do with the charging problem you are having. Trickle charging from the PC while the tablet is off normally it charges at about 3% per hour that way.

There are two things that could be causing this problem.

    1. Bad cable, there is a jumper in the ASUS cable the tells the charger it is connected to a TF and to charge at 15V

    2. Bad charger preventing it from going into the 15V charge mode.

Only solution is to get a new charging set or see if you can find somone that has a TF and test out these two items. If near a retail store that sells TF's maybe they will let you test with there demo model.

    Yup, what they said

Just to add, no matter what you may think you have read about how a TF charges etc, the facts can be found here...
