"Too many windows open" OK, but how do they close?

Forgive the question, as I'm sure it's been asked before (though Search did not discover).

Whilst fighting to reload Words with Friends last night, I was visiting numerous locations and applications, but suddenly received the angry message from the TF, saying "Cannot open window. You have too many windows open".

I tapped the "two overlaying squares" icon that flashes up the active windows and, fair enough, there were oodles of them.

I always assumed that they closed when you wandered away from one in favour of another. Y'see I'm still using an iPhoney3G (not GS) and it doesn't multi task. This multi windows stuff is still alien to me.

How do I close windows that I don't want any more?

The only method I could think of (late at night) was a reboot.

Thanks, Mickeylittle - but *really*.....FOUR buttons? Why not an "X" in the corner like Windows?

Is there an Android technical reason why not? Just curious.

That's a great question. With Apple it works the same way when you open the multitasking panel you can quickly close individual apps 1 at a time. If this is something that you feel the need to do on a regular basis just download Advanced Task Killer and you can set it to delete all open apps except for the ones that need to be kept running. It works really good but I just don't feel the personal need for it.

Android doesn't should need to kill process, because he has got a kind of "garbage collector" if i can abuse the terms...

...it will steal the resource needed by an active process from the other "sleeping"...so you will never really close an application, just put it in a sleeping state.

So the message "Too many windows open" sounds really strange to me O_O

As Mikey said, anyway, you can use ATK...a lot of peeps talks of this app.

So as I have seen said here and elsewhere, Android is so good at housekeeping that you don't ready need task killers. Does this post not kind of imply that it need some help?
I use a task killer on my phone just because it is a quick way of shutting stuff down but do not have one on my transformer as I had not yet found I needed one.
    Food for thought.
