    Rooting?

Forgive my ignorance but I am still relatively new to Android. What is rooting? Is it like jailbreaking an iPhone? I am not a developer and have lost interest in playing around with config files so what can rooting do for me? I coud use that left speaker fix but it looks a little too complicated for me...do you think some brilliant soul will eventually come out with some sort of patch?

It means you apply a custom firmware which allows access to Administrative options that the company would rather you not play around with. You can overclock. Access and write system files. Tweak your settings further and do things like backing up and restoring.

one key thing is it allows you to use apps like Titanium Backup, which will backup all your apps and settings. Very useful if you have apps or games with save data that you dont want to lose in case you have to do a restore. Also, you can do full backup of your system.

Hrm, how hard is it to do this? Also what if I'm already on 3.1 can I do it? If I have to downgrade to do it can I then upgrade back to 3.1, and are you pretty much rooted 4 life after doing it once or is it like iPhone/iPad where you update you lose the jb?

Since we are on the subject, how effective is the overclock actually? Does it improve much, such as the extreme browser lag that many of us face?
