Preparing for ICS - JB or other updates

Just because you get a notification of a FW update does NOT mean it must be immediately installed. Allow some people who did not read this post to install it first to see if they had issues.

I suggest you start with at least a 50% charge to be on the safe side as it will probably consumed quite a bit of battery and 50% is a good safety figure.

Before applying the update I suggest you do a hard reset just to be certain nothing is interfering with the update during the install process. (hard reset instructions in my signature links)

It would also be a good idea to use the App Backup to make a full backup of your system's apps and associated data/settings just in case something does go wrong.

If you are rooted and/or have any custom roms installed I would take a hard look at even thinking about ICS/JB or other patches unless you first put your TF back to stock.

One more thing that may end up being important. Manually check your Android Market app and Amazon Market app for updates just prior to applying the FW update.

Great post with good advice, so should this be a Sticky until the dust settles down?

I'm not a huge fan of stickies myself, and since it's my post I don't want to be accused of any self promotion . I'll let another mod make that decision.

In another thread it was stated that the 101 will also receive ICS on the 12th???

Anyways, here's a question, if you don't do a hard reset before the update, will it still revert everything back to factory settings?? Or still keep all settings and apps?

No you are referring to a factory reset!

Lee not to disagree but with this last update mess I am going to follow your advice except I am going to try the update at 20% battery with the charger plugged in just in case it bricks. My confidence level is a little shaky right now.

    Righteo, was just abit unsure.

With coming from a Windows Mobile background and only recently having an Android Phone and now a tablet, I was used to the whole ROM updates which woudl reset your phone.

    Thanks for the clarification though

I've seen people comment about ensuring you have adequate charge on the tablet. Is there a problem with just having it plugged into a power source while you're doing it?

Sorry if it's a stupid question....but the comment appeared pretty specific, and my natural inclination is that if something's going to take that much power, and is mission critical, I plug into a power source to be sure of uninterrupted power.

Actually...I suspect having the unit plugged in during the ICS update might be a good plan since it will be a major update and take longer than most previous updates. Not sure if will be required though....I suspect not.
