Sigh, back on this again. I'm thinking I may have a battery issue after all but I still need a new AC adapter regardless. Is there any alternative USB AC adapter that will work well with the tablet since the actual Asus one is never in stock anywhere?
Asus states that a charger putting out less then 12v will power the unit but will not charge the unit
The problem is your "backup charger". I read somewhere the usb cable has been specially modified to allow a greater voltage/wattage/amperage throughput or something. I think if anyone were to charge from their pc they'd get a similar charge rate as your seeing.
You can modify existing usb cables to allow the greater throughput (I read about it somewhere, but cant find it just now)
You will need a USB 3.0 cable. The 3.0 has 5 pins where as the 2.0 has 4. I don't think a 2.0 cable can be modified.
To charge a battery, the adapter needs to supply enough current. Also when charging Lithium-Ion batteries, the last 5% or so is very slowly charged. The Transformer manual states that a green light represents 95%-100% charge. If it's green, it could still be at 95% and charging very slowly up to 100%. The manual also clearly states that the first charge should be for a full 8 hours, even if the light is "green". LiIon batteries have a circuit that will stop charging when it's full to protect the battery, so you don't have to worry about overcharging. Manual also says that when you fully deplete the battery, you must charge it for 8 hours, otherwise you may never get a full charge out of them ever again. That's how LiIon batteries work.

Thanks for the link. It's a good read.
So, knowing that I need a charger that's at least 12v, would something such as the following work?
Amazon.com: Powerjolt Dual Universal USB Micro: Electronics
I already have an adapter to plug a car charger into a standard outlet. I may look for a higher quality charger but I believe this is a good brand and want others' opinions on it before I take a chance.
