TF101 not recognized by PC (Windows 7/8 x64)

OK. Let's start at the beginning.
I have gotten my hands on Asus EEE Pad Transformer TF101. Just the tablet. No dock/keyboard. It was really cheap. I was told it came form USA, and I'm in Europe. I have no warranty, and even if I did, it would've been over the warranty period by now, so RMA is not an option.

It's obviously rooted, has a custom rom and recovery (ClockworkMod Recovery v3.2.0.1. roach2010-tf101-r1)

This is what it says in Settings > About:

    Model Number:
Transformer TF101G (although I think it is actually just a Wi-Fi model - TF101, it has no SIM slot - and this means that it probably has wrong ROM flashed, which might be causing the USB problem)

    Android version:
    3.2.1

    Baseband version:
    Unknown

    GPS version:
    V5.5.8

    Wi-Fi version:
    V5.2.65

    Bluetooth version
    v6.24

    Kernel version:
    2.6.36.4-g6aa10ba
    roach@nimda #20111023

    Build number
    HTK75.prime_epad-2.1.0-20111105

    Mobile Dock version:
    Not available

It seems to be working fine, except for being totally filled up with apps, bloatware and data. Natural instinct was to install a clean ROM. I wanted to go with CM, and a newer Recovery, but I got stuck on the first step. I can't get it recognized on any of my computers. Both Windows 7 and 8.

However, when I plug it in, I get; USB device not recognized. One of the USB devices attached to you computer has malfunctioned... This happens when I connect the USB cable when Android is booted up, when in recovery and also in APX mode, providing I have entered it (I'm not really sure because the display is always black).

In Device Manager, I can see only one exclamation icon (I did enable show hidden devices) in Universal Serious Bus Controllers called Unknown Device, which seems to be from the TF101. I tried uninstalling it. Restarting both the tablet and the computers. I tried to manually override those Unknown Device drivers with ASUS Android USB drivers for Windows and Universal_Naked_Driver_0.72 and ventana apx driver, but it wouldn't take any of them. I also tried installing them manually by right clicking on the INF files, and still nothing.

Then I thought I could mount the sdcard or USB mode in recovery, but that wouldn't work either, since the current recovery doesn't seem to support mounting either the internal memory nor the sdcard.
So now I am stuck. I know I can transfer files by other means, but I need to flash other ROM. Either Stock or Custom. How can I do that without the USB?

    Any solutions?

I hope someone more knowledgable than I comes along. That said the first thing I would do is install TWRP. As I recall you won't need you're computer as you said it is already rooted. You get TWRP by getting Goo Manager from the Google Play Store. Open Goo and in the top right corner of your screen tap the 3 bars, and select OpenRecoveryScript . It should install TWRP 3.2.3.2 and from there you can do backup of your entire system [do it on microSD card so you don't wipe the internal SD card.] AFTER TWRP is installed and working you can try another rom. I think I saw that EOS4 was working on later builds with the TF101G.

read up to see, in any case TWRP will not hurt you.

    That actually sounds promising. Thanks!
I didn't think I could install TWRP like that. I will certainly try that. Is there a way to install CWM recovery like that?

    EDIT: One more thing...Will installing
TWRP override the existing CWM recovery?

Unfortunately, Goo manager refused to find and install recovery. "No recoveries were found for your device."
Any other ways to flash another recovery without USB connection?

I have not used CWM since I got TWRP last summer, so no idea how to install it, sorry.

Yes, CWM will be gone, so if you have any backups you can't live without that need CWM do something about it/them before getting TWRP. TWRP does have a nice backup/restore function, but you may also want a full Titanium Backup saved on microSD or your desktop also. Just be careful how you restore from it... Frederuco had a very nice writeup somewhere here. I don't get TWRP the way he does as it was an older version if I recall, but very nice writeup and he shows how to make good use of a Titanium Backup.

Yes. I understand. However, Go Manager refuses to find and install TWRP, or any other recovery or ROM. It says "No recoveries were found for your device."

    I've seen Frederuco's guide before, but I cannot follow it because;
    a) cannot connect it to PC via USB (it says USB device not recognized. One of the USB devices attached to you computer has malfunctioned... ) - I don't get APX under Other devices in Device Manager when I connect my TF101 in APX mode to PC. I only get Unknown device just like what I get when I connect it in any other way, and I cannot apply naked usb drivers to that
    b) cannot access microSD or internal memory from current recovery to install a zip from there. The recovery that I have at the moment doesn't support that.

My only chance is to find a way to flash any new working recovery without USB and recovery. I would also be pleased if I could flash a ROM without it, but I don't see a way.

I think I was typing my reply when you were posting that sad news... There is a way I read about when on the TWRP site once but that meant access via the computer. I wonder if someone really did flash the wrong version and that is causing the tf101 to rreport to goo that you have a g model, I don't even know enough about the g models to tell you if/where a sim slot is. But if it is a straight 101 then maybe you could reflash something else that is correct.... I really don't know, out of my league here at this point. Let's hope someone with more ideas jumps in. Meanwhile I'm going to google the tf101 v tf101g and see what i can find...

You can get user manuals here to download. The G does have a SIM drawer, it is on the same side/edge as the volume and power buttons. about in the middle. No SIM drawer/slot it can't be a G as you suspected. So now the questions are how did they get it listed as a G and can simply flashing a Rom change it back?? Now if he flashed a stock incorrect version I am not sure if you can flash a stock version??? They have odd requirements for files. Getting the stock firmware is not difficult but wether it will work is dubious as you have to know the country it was made for... the filenames must be right. I don't know if you can fool them or not. Here is the download page but you need the proper file for your location ... and then load it the right way IF it will let you do it.

I'm 100% sure it's a TF101. So I guess TF101G firmware was flashed on it, and not stock firmware, but some custom 3.2.1 ROM, probably called Roach or something like that.
l would have flashed the stock ROM already by trail and error method, however here is the problem. How can I flash it? I can't get my tf101 connected to PC via USB in any way I've tried. I also can't flash the zip from recovery... I tried ROM Manager, but when I choose to flash ROM it just reboots back.
I did managed to flash the newest recovery by ROM Manager, but I still can't mount the SDcard from it. I tried to flash TWRP from ROM Manager, but it doesn't seem to override the CWM, although ROM Manager says both are installed.

I need an alternative method to flash either TWRP or stock/custom ROM. Or to understand and fix why I can't get it to connect via USB.

    Thanks BTW...
