    MicroSD card class

Im going to buy a microSD card for my tablet. Im deciding between an 8gb and a 16gb. My question is if class 4 is fast enought to run apps off of and watch videos off of. Thanks

Class 4 is just fine.. You may want to consider the 16G if your budget allows.

As Jeffrey stated a Class 4 is more than adequate. I run CL4's in my tablets, smartphones and digital cameras. And one of my digi cams records in 720p. No issue with read or write lag at all.

You never can have enough memory. Watch for the sales on a 32GB. You can get them for $40 to $50. But make sure the seller is reputable on any that you buy.

The speed class of the sd card is it's write/read speed in terms of MB/sec, so a class 4 card will have a read and write speed of 4 MB/sec. In comparison, a 1x DVD player has a read speed of 1.32 MB/sec. With this in mind, I see no reason why a class 4 card will not perform admirably for watching videos, or running applications.

I also agree with getting the largest storage capacity card your budget will allow.
Alright you primitive screw heads, listen up. See this? This... is my BOOM STICK!

    A few things :

    1. A faster card will help save some time when you're copying media onto the card.
    2. Class 4 refers to the minimum sustained write speed to the card. If data is being written to the card continuously, it should never go below 4 MB/s. Usually the cards are faster than that. One of my Class 4 cards tested at Class 6 speed. One of my Class 6 cards tested beyond Class 10 speeds. It's highly dependent on batch, however.
    3. A good program for testing cards for errors and read / write speed is h2testw (for Windows).
    4. Read speed is usually faster than write speed.

To answer your original question, a class 4 card is more than sufficient for video playback, if you don't mind a longer wait time copying files onto the card. If it really writes at 4 MB/s, a 16 GB card will take 16000/4 = 4000 seconds, or more than an hour, to copy a card full of media onto it.

If you have some time to spare before buying, I would suggest checking out a site like Slickdeals or FatWallet to look for a good deal. Normal prices are very bloated.

ETA: Although usually the really good deals require mail in rebates which some people feel aren't worth their time...

In general...the faster the SDMicro card (or SD card in the Dock) the better - as others have indicagted...for larger files (like videos), the performance is as good as it gets.

I've used a Class 4, Class 6, and Class 10 SD Micro card....all worked. The Class 6 and above seem to do the best job with larger files.
