Multiple startup issues on day 1 - Wifi not working + firmware update not executing

    Hi,

Just bought my ASUS transformer off Amazon two days back.

Problem 1: Doesnt connect to my home wifi network which is a comcast provided xfinity service. My Laptop is connecting to the same network, so I believe the router is not the issue. It seems to have WPA2 security encryption - is that the issue ?

Problem 2: After multiple frustrating calls with the ASUS support desk, they asked me to update my firmware given that my OS was android 3.1 (why it wasn't already 3.2 given I bought it only 2 days ago is wierd in the first place). However, even the firmware isnt getting updated as the file I try to open in the transformer from the update folder I downloaded off support.asus.com returns "Open file failed".

The suppport guys said updating the firmware should solve both issues, but how the heck do i do that ? I have half a mind to return this product back, as despite being brand new it has multiple issues.

    thanks & awaiting your reply,

    Welcome to the forum

The way to get the TF to force an update is to load the unzipped update to the root of a MicroSD card, insert the card and power off the TF. When you power back up it should read the update and install it.

Thanks - will give that a try. By root, do you mean outside of any other folders ? and unzipping the folder gives me a big 520MB file called 'blob' (very casually named for a big update file). Is that what you meant ?

Root directory is the top level directory.

Usually the file is not called "blob" but I am not sure for all updates. I think you can also leave the file zipped in the top level directory.

Another option for trying to update automatically, from the home screen or app drawer open "Settings" - "About" - "Update" - "Check for update". Once you tap this it should tell you there is an update in the notification area. Tap the clock in the lower right and it should have an option to download and install the update.

When i got my tab it also didn't connect to my wifi. I played with the wifi sleep and that fixed it.

For me it was set to never by default, so i switched to one of the other ones, and then back to never, and it works now.

At work it still won't connect so i used connectify to form a virtual hotspot and connected to that, a sort of daisy chain.

Try unplugging your home router for 10 seconds - then plug it back in. Then try to connect to the internet. I had to do this twice, per instruction from ASUS help

    Welcome to the forum.

You problems as such seem to be addressed adequately by so many expert here - so I am not going to repeat it again.

I am just responding to your comment there - Asus is a very reputable company in my view and they have been supporting the Transformer and providing software support to their customers in a commendable way.

Please note that a completely new version of the Android software would be available on all TFs - called as Ice Cream Sandwich - and even though the release of this totally new software is due any time now, Asus has still taken pains to release a bug fix release of their present Honey Comb version of Android.

Also please note that this Ice Cream Sandwich is mainly released by Google and Asus is adding some of their own software into it - so rest assured that the purchase you made is of a good product and there is no reason for any panic. You just need to be a bit more patient!
