NVIDIA: Android will squash iPad in 3yrs; Kal-El scores 10 design wins
NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang has revealed that the company has already found 10 design wins for the upcoming quad core "Kal-El" next gen processor, leading the outspoken exec to predict that, within three years, Android tablets will be outselling Apple’s iPad. Speaking at the
Reuters summit, Huang pointed to the rapid progress of Android smartphones, suggesting that the same pattern would hold true in tablets.
“The Android phone took only two and a half years to achieve the momentum that we’re talking about” he explained. “I would expect the same thing on Honeycomb tablets.”
Kal-El will, Huang believes, help lead that drive. NVIDIA’s next chip has apparently found a space “at least ten” devices; “we have five major phone companies and we have five major PC [manufacturers]” he revealed. Kal-El was announced back in February, promising 5x the performance of Tegra 2 as found in current Honeycomb tablets like the Motorola XOOM and Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1.

I maybe taking advantage of my extended warrenty on this thing at some point.

They need to do this quicker since a lot of companies r implementing iPad in the work force like mine is. If enterprises are grounded in the iPad by investing in apps specific for the company then is hard for android base devices to penetrate.

is there any eta on timing yet? :/ makes me kinda wanna wait..

[QUOTE=jaycemiskel;2835]Transformer 2 anyone?
That's right Transformer 2 the coming of Kal-el!

Very curious about the Kal-El. Judging from the introduction it's really something. Don't know if it is a logical fit with a tablet pc at this moment though, a quad-core processor.

Well, Nvidia would push the hardware aspects, but tablets are all about the apps aren't they? People aren't going to do a spec comparison buying a tablet like they do with PCs, it's going to be about what apps they can run and the quality/size/weight of the device. Fill rates and MIPS just don't come in to it.

What?
Sounds like you should buy an Apple.

Android started out with no apps when the iPhone had 100s of thousands. There are basic apps that everyone needs, and those were the first ones both platforms got. Email, Calendar, a Browser, Youtube, Media (music/video/photo playback), and a few games. That's enough to sell one, which is why iPads sold the first day they were released and the good android tablets have been selling faster than they can be made. There is no app I desperately needed/wanted on my iPad that I couldn't find a parallel for to run on my Transformer. So much for it being about the apps. Of course if you're after a killer (to you) app, and it only runs on one platform, then you should buy that platform. Tomorrow the game is about Sync. Sync is the killer app that will make any tablet simply an extension of your PC and/or Phone. Apple bets iCloud on that future. Google got there first though, and will be on their third generation before the iPad's iCloud is 3 months old. Android runs on everything from the 2.8" Archos player to these 10.1" tablet. I can already play any song from my entire collection on every android device I own, from my archos 32 to my Hero phone to my Transformer. Using Google Music beta and their web browsers to connect to it I can also play any song I own on my iPod Touch (even the 1st gen), iPad2, or my Zune HD. Throw in any web browser on any PC as well.
And thanks to Samsung, all claims to thin and light being its killer features have Apple's iPad running scared over the Tab. Apple's suit is a serious flinch. Hopefully it'll keep them innovating. They are playing catch-up now. iOS 5's top new features were all copies of features other companies/devices already have. Wireless sync? I've had that on my Zunes for years. Cordless setup? My ancient archos 5 android tablet from October of 2009 needed no connection to a PC to set up.
