Asus Padfone 2 Reportedly Sold Nearly 1 Million Units

It looks like Asus has another decent hit on their hands with the Padfone 2. According to supply chain sources, Asus may have sold more Padfone 2 units than Microsoft sold of the Surface RT, to the tune of nearly 1 Million units (for reference current estimates suggest MS sold less than 750,000 units of the Surface RT). Here's the full quote,

Asustek Computer launched Padfone 2, a hybrid smartphone/tablet model, three months ago and nearly one million units have been sold globally, with shipments continuing, according to Taiwan-based supply chain makers.

Padfone features Qualcomm S4 1.5GHz quad-core processor, a 4.7-inch touch screen, a 13-megapixel rear camera, 16-hour battery life, 3G voice communications and a weight of 649g, the sources indicated.

Among PC vendors who have entered the smartphone market, Asustek and Lenovo have performed the best, the sources claimed. Asustek is expected to unveil an upgraded version of Padfone and other smartphone models with large screens at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona during February 25-28, the sources indicated.
It will definitely be exciting to see what Asus unveils at the MWC later this month.

I always want to ask the same question when I read statistics about sales of products of this type - "sold to whom?"

    Sold to retailers?
    Sold to wholesalers?
Or are these just order book quantities?
Or actual sales to end users?

I doubt I will ever get an answer...

Cupertino is that town where Tim Cook "just works" while wondering why Apple is losing market share as well as the "cool" factor.

Apple aren't alone - MS are going backwards (Win8 sales "disappointing", RT a flop?, surface sales "disappointing", Apple sales are down (reducing manufacturing orders for the iPhone5)...

In the meantime, Samsung's android devices grow in popularity, decrease in price and things are looking good from their neck of the woods.

I saw a news report that said that Samsung now are the biggest supplier in the market with global market share in the smartphone market of well over 30% - might have been 35/38% - I can't remember. Certainly they are the biggest seller of Android devices in the world & here in the UK they are as ubiquitous as the iPad - in some places far more so given their prices - which are very appropriate & worth the extra over the cheaper Chineses options.

Sadly, the same cannot be said for Asus who seem to have dropped the UK & Europe very much to the bottom of their sales area. Choice is limited, prices are premium & bricks & mortar stores don't have them at all.

The tf101 was everywhere 18 months ago - now the name Transformer is completely absent from stores

In the U.S. Apple has 34% of the smartphone market, Samsung is 32%.

It is odd about the Transformer availability in the U.K. and the marketing decisions.
