I assume this is the 300la, with Windows 8 since this is the Win 8 forum. I am having this issue as well.

Getting to the BIOS finally worked for me after spamming the F2 key from the tie I click reboot until the time the BIOS showed up. Sadly, this did not help as there is no boot from USB option in the BIOS. You have to specify the command line to the boot file to make it so. I couldn't even get mine to boot from an external DVD drive with a Win 8 disk in it.

EDIT: I just read this in the manual, it might be easier than spamming the F2 key... "If you are using your tablet as a mobile device, restart your system
then press the volume down button during POST."

For me, I was trying to get Ubuntu to boot so I could have Linux and Windows 8 available. As of now this is a no go.

There is a new BIOS (dated Jan-2014) on the Asus support site that says, "Booting from USB stick if 'Power Button + Volume up key' has been pressed." After I flashed this BIOS I powered down the T300LA, pressed the volume up rocker lever and pressed the power button with the bootable USB stick in. The Ubuntu hourglass showed briefly but then booted to Win 8. So, closer, but not quite. I tried Puppy Linux and Open Suse on the same disk (after verifying on my older desktop that they were bootable). After talking to a tech buddy, we think it might be due to UEFI and the USB boot not initializing all of the firmware drivers properly.

One last thing, for now, I have settled on VMWare Player (free)and downloaded an Ubuntu VMWare image (free, you can also find other open source OSs pre-built no problem). It's working very well for me right now.

I do want to boot to a USB though, so hopefully someone will figure out what's up.

VMWare Player (it's the last entry under the 'Desktop & End-User Computing' section):

    I solved the problem.
First one has to update the Bios Firmware with the link above. For this update use the Windows BIOS Flash Utility (http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/...64_VER2420.zip).
Then enter the BIOS/UEFI by pressing the powerbutton and the volume down button. Enter the menu security and then go to secure BOOT menu (its at the bottom of the menu) and disable the secure boot control. Go to the boot menu and enable LAUNCH CSM. Now it is possible to boot from USB by pressing the power and the volume up button at once.
