"Windows 10 Technical Preview" in windows update

I noticed the Win1o sticky in this forum, but Microsoft offered me "Windows 10 Technical Preview" in Windows update.

Can it be done like that ? Will it crash ? Damage my system ?

I doubt if anyone will be able to reliably tell you the answer to your question/s.

If you do decide to go ahead, then backup (twice) first and do a refresh of Windows and then a restore point first would be my advice. Incidentally, if you create a system image with something like Macrium Reflect then you would always be able to go back via that method also. (If needed )

This is "wild west" territory you know - lets face it, even released MS versions aren't renouned for their stability and robust nature!

I'll tell you what happened in my case: it attempted to install a few times, then finally did. Problem is, most of the drivers were blown away in the upgrade. I'm not sure why, exactly, but I think it has something to do with the fact that these are SOC tablets running a compressed operating system. Build 9926 wouldn't upgrade directly from a WimBoot version of 8.1, but it would upgrade from an uncompressed installation. Build 10041, which was the first offered in Update, does allow for a direct upgrade, but neither it nor 10074 will retain the installed drivers.

Here's my suggestion (and this is what I ended up doing): if you're going to install the tech preview, download the 10074 ISO from the Microsoft site and do a clean install (as in, wipe the SSD clean and start from scratch). Then download and install the drivers from the ASUS site. The problems I ran into were pretty simple to solve, if a little time-consuming: you have to right-click and manually install each of the INF files in the SOC download, and the Broadcom GPS installer will tell you that it can't install, but it actually does install, even though it claims to have rolled itself back. You should end up with a fully-functional tablet with Win10.
