    T100 Help Needed [ disk space,etc.]

    Hi guys

Though I am comfortable with computing but I consider myself a “newbie” in the modern “touch-pad” era of technology.

Few months ago I decided getting adventurous and got a T100-32G (with 500GB in the dock/ pad) from states as a gifted by a friend. (I fear it is still not available in Canada).

I was using it off and on and felt like getting along with it. (I use my laptop on regular basis despite having it every day)
A week ago, when, tried to update this hybrid tablet (T100), I perceived I got some problem downloading the updates. It was taking forever.
When tried to refresh it, I got the message that it needs approximately 7.8G to do so.

When checked my “C-drive, I had only 2G.

How to get this 7.8G and why?

I tried to troubleshoot it but could not succeed and decided to “re-set” it to the factory-default but, before doing it, I thought If some gentleman help me out of this mess without doing this re-set or re-shuffling completely.

    PS:

Couple more points, in the beginning, I tried to insert the micro SD card in the provided slot but card got broken inside either due to my faulty method or some manufacturing weakness. (Whatever, it is there stuck and useless; never tried to take it out.)

MacAfee as an antivirus is installed because my ISP provides it free and.

All the Apps are there and I use none.

I downloaded VLC media and Chrome browser.

I have no music, video files or anything. The HDD is almost free i.e. 498G is available to use.
    ----
The purpose of above details is to provide crystal clear picture of the situation.
    --
Here are the points where I need help.

1- Can I use my D drive for downloading updates? If YES, then, How?
( I think these all are updates from windows, Asus or other apps which took all the available space)

2- Can I increase C drive’s partition to accommodate these ever-coming UPDATES? If YES, then, How?

3- If no solution other than resetting it to factory default then how to avoid this problem in future?

    Regards

You can't change where the updates are installed. It must be the OS drive, but you may be able to minimize the space required. In explorer right click Local disk C then click on disk cleanup. On the next screen click the cleanup button again (on the left this time) then check all the items in the list and click clean. That could recover, in some cases, several GB of disk space including some parts of the updates no longer needed.

You may also be able to move some of the data to D: if you can find what's taking up the space.

As an added note. On the cleanup dialogue box Leeshor mentioned there I'd another button to clean up system files with administrative access. Thus means you can remove previous update and old system files. Also consider uninstalling things like macafee.

In trying to ferret out what's hogging space I found the WinDirStat program most helpful!

Free disk space is a problem with the 32 gb model. I don't think 32 gb is large enough for Windows 8.1 unless you do the WIM compression. I am waiting for Windows 10, which is supposed to have a smaller footprint due to compression. You can check the following:

    1. Your pagefil.sys and hiberfil.sys files. You can alter their size.
    2. Your restore points. Alter the size or just keep one restore point.
    3. Your Windows Store apps. These cannot be installed anywhere except the SSD. If you had a lot on another system, Windows will install them all when you activated the T100. Uninstall as many of these as you can.
    4. Don't set automatic Windows Updates. Only install the important ones.
    5. Run Disk Cleaner and also get rid of system (Windows Update) files.
    6. Clean out your browser cache and history.
    7. Is your recovery partition on the SSD?
    8. As mentioned, you can't change the location of the updates.

I have a fully updated Windows and Office 2013 (installed to SD card) and only have about 2 gb free. I have never had to install 7 gb of updates at one time. Could be your McAfee, I guess, or you must not have updated for 3-4 months. Windows/Office updates are normally 600-1.3 mb monthly.

Can't you just create junction points for the windows apps?

I think people have tried the pointers and changed the registry location but still not very reliable. I hear it might be possible to change the install location in Windows 10.

You are aware that the card can't be pulled out but must be pushed further in and then released? It should then come out by spring action.( I had the same problem on my first MP3 player, years ago ;-))
