This may help you make a decision. I think I would keep the fast startup but maybe limit the size of the hyberfile.sys file.
    HDG Explains - Swapfile.sys, Hiberfil.sys and Pagefile.sys in Windows 8

Unfortunately, the C: drive space is at a premium since Windows store apps and Windows/Office updates have to load there.

I did do some searching but unfortunatly didn't find the answer, hence thats why I asked the question.
I have a 64GB sandisk extreme micro SD card, NTFS formatted and installed the majority of my program files on it.
Thankyou fiat_lux, will check it out.

I've not tried nor do I endorse anything written here but look at this link edit

Sometimes it's smart to search outside these forums too.

Sorry j1000, I guess that link was inappropriate per the forum rules, so it was edited out and I don't recall what it was.

But I always cringe when there is a 500 mb-1 gb Windows/Office Update. I have shut off automatic updates and only install the important ones. I constantly run Disk Cleanup and like you said, usually 500 mb at the most. I've been hovering around 5-7 gb free with no additional programs installed.
I have seen on some other threads that I cant find now about the 32 GB model, with 500 GB HDD having the 8GB recovery partition appear after they have sent it back for service. That is my situation so I don't even have the 8-9 GB of normal free space and it is a problem. I also recall seeing something about moving that recovery partition to the hard drive or some other drive to free up the space. Can anyone address this again and help me figure out how to add some usable space that I desperately need?

HD space down to <2GB and going down, nothing additional installed.

I don't know what is happening with my 32GB SSD drive but in the past few days, the space has been decreasing for no explainable reason.
I have a new Asus T100TA that runs on Windows 8.1. It says the Capacity is 20,8GB out of which only 1.6 are available.
I haven't installed anything other than what was already installed to begin with except for VLC media player. I have even uninstalled a few apps (according to "Disk Space" only around 128MB are used for apps right now). I save ALL my media files in the 500GB drive (on the keyboard). I've ran Disk Clean-Up, including "Clean Up System Files", but it hardly does anything.

Any idea of what could be happening and how to regain my HD space?

    Thank you very much,

ETA. I may have been a bit hasty saying I've only installed VLC. I also have dropbox (which takes up 568MB) and Avast. Plus the programs that were pre-installed with the computer, including Microsoft Office.

PS. Apologies, I meant to post this in the Help section, but can't figure out how to move it now.

The weirdest thing is that it seems to come up and down, not by huge margins, but this morning it oscillates between 1.6GB and 2GB of free left space. I mean, I suppose it could even be a virus, but I ran a full system scan and nothing else seems to indicate this.

It sounds like you have a 32GB model which has been RMA'd or been through the refurbish process.

Here is the typical space used by the 32GB model.
    32GB Model
    MMC Total Capacity=29.8GB
    EFI System partition=100MB
    Recover Partition=700MB
    Recovery Image Partition=0GB
    C: Drive Capacity= 28.2 GB
Approximate Windows 8.1 with updates used Capacity Size= 18GB
    Free Space= 10.2GB
*32GB model has an additional 8GB ROM that contains Recovery Image

I haven't seen this, but what I've read in these forums is that when a 32GB model has been through the refurbish process, they then put the 8GB "Recovery Image Partition" as part of the onboard SSD instead of being on the additional 8GB ROM. Which means in the numbers I posted above, you would see 8GB less of "Free Space", which would leave you with 2.2GB of free space which is what you're reporting.

If you could post a picture of what Disk Manager shows you, it would tell us for sure.
