bit locker turn on out of the box?

hi, i noticed that when i bought the device that i had a big padlock (bitlocker) after a series of asus updates yesterday i have noticed that this has now disappeared?

so the two things that puzzle me now are, what has happened here as i can still access the drive and its somehow been unencrypted?

secondly, is there really any point in the device being installed with bitlocker as the data is stored on the actual board so its not like anything can be stolen.

I noticed mine is the same - the C drive is shown as an encrypted drive when I looked in the Disk Management menu. Not sure this is how I want it set up though.

Windows 8 is fairly new to me - so not sure if this is normal or not. I also can't see the recovery partition on mine (32GB + 500GB drive in dock) "H1" model...

You could desolder the eMMC and install it on another board or always possible to run it off a USB stick and read out the eMMC storage that way.

Many ways you could access the data. So, it just depends on YOU.

Me, I am not that worried about it. I don't keep anything particularly secure on it, so it it was lost/stolen I'd be pissed, but not petrified.

ok cool, i have nothing on there that concerns me either, but i assume if it is encrypted and i decrypt it then it should get a nice little speed boost, or is there some kind of fancy encryption thing built inside?

I would like to hear the answer to this as well. I also need to read this link when I get some free time...

Yes, it offloads encryption as it has AES-NI instruction set support. So there should be no effective slow down. Now, it'll take awhile to enable bit locker and encrypt the volume the first time, but processor overhead is minimal with AES-NI support and it seems like the eMMC controller in the bay trail SOC also effectively supports encrypted partitions as there doesn't seem to be a noticable impact on disk read/write IOPS with it enabled versus disabled.
