32GB model: Wiped all partitions on SSD, how do I restore from read-only recovery?

I've attempted to install Linux (fedlet) on my 32GB T100 and was having some problems with the LiveUSB. One of the things I tried was to flash it directly onto the SSD, which was a mistake.

The internal SSD is now wiped. I can see when I boot the LiveUSB that the read-only drive is there, but I can see no way to restore that to the SSD.

Can you boot in to the recovery environment (spam F9 on boot)? Or is that killed also (I assume yes, you killed the windows recovery environment. IE that 900MB recovery partition on the 32GB eMMC)?

If its killed, you could try creating a bootable USB drive with a win 8.1 iso. You should be able to do a recovery using that, though I don't know if it'll let you point to the existing recovery image or not.

Does this need to be a specific Windows 8.1? Or can I use these instructions on any Windows 8.1 PC?

You will need to purchase it if you didn't get the install key before the wipe. Some of the tablets are not coming with the key on a label.

The install key is stored in the UEFI/BIOS. 8.1 requires entering a valid key to install, which you'd need to extract first, but using the USB drive, you should be able to do a system recovery by pointing it at the recovery partition once you boot from the USB drive.

Also, you can google the default windows 8.1 installation key. Its part of all 8.1 ISOs AFAIK. It will NOT activate the installed copy, but it will allow you to actually install it first and then windows should activate itself with the key stored in the UEFI/BIOS given a short period of time/a reboot or two (supposing that trying to point it at the recovery partition does not work).

Its how I activated 8.1 on my laptop when I had already killed the restore partition and had not extracted my key first.

I have my licence key on a piece of card that came with the laptop - it has Office branding all over it but I assume it's a combined licence as it's labelled "Windows 8.1 Small Screen Touch with Office Home &Student 2013"

No, that is the key for Office only, not windows. Microsoft put a policy in to effect with Windows 7 that keys are not included with or stuck on any products shipping windows. Its embedded in the BIOS/UEFI only. You can run a key extractor to get it normally.

In this case, you can still create the recovery USB thumb drive and see if it'll let you point at the existing recovery partition. You won't need the key for that. You will need the key to actually install windows 8.1.
