tried this .. got my key:
Download Windows 8 Product Key Viewer 1.4.7d

just curious but did you try to activate it when it prompts you?
or does it then ask for a key?

I agree, the best bet is to do the Asus restore using the restore partition. There are different kinds of key for windows and different kinds of iso's. There's an enterprise key, a volume license key, a retail key and an OEM key. The key with our Asus (and probably other store bought machines) is an OEM key that you can not use retail, enterprise or VL iso's. I'm not even sure OEM's use ISO's. Most of them use pre-activated images.

Had to do this a number of times. The way I do it is set up a USB stick with the Windows 8.1 installer and add an ei.cfg in Sources with the following in it:

    [EditionID]

    [Channel]
    OEM

    [VL]
    0
The installer will then allow you to skip putting in a product key during install and OOBE (but will require it still to activate). Then once in Windows and setup use the Product Key Viewer above to extract the product key from the firmware and use it to activate the install. Jobs a carrot.

once the product key is extracted and written down,
you can just press "windows key + r" and type "slui 3".
this will open the windows menu for changing product key. (i would suspect oem keys do work in Retail versions this way)

but how do you download that 8.1 iso if the windows setup doesnt take our product key?

Write the ISO to a USB stick. The EI.CFG file defines the version of Windows that the install is for, so you set it as per my posting and it creates an OEM install which can be installed without entering the key.

Once you are in Windows then you have an install of Windows made which is ready to be (legally and legitimately) activated with your OEM product key extracted from the firmware.

Oh. They are readily available - with the right link you can just download that from Microsoft anyway. Use Google.

no, thats what i was saying earlier.
when you try to download the iso using the official microsoft way,
the program says that our oem key is not valid to download their "Retail version" of windows 8.

Looks like they've locked down the method you could use, used to be possible to just extract a link to the official server they hosted them on and then download from there. Not had to do it in a while as I just use my MSDN account.

Even so it hardly takes a mastermind to obtain a download of the ISO with a bit of Googling.

courtesy of The Official Windows 8 Repository
    Windows 8 RTM English, 32-bit (x86)
    Filename: en_windows_8_x86_dvd_915417.iso
    Size: 2.45 GB SHA-1: 22D680EC53336BEE8A5B276A972CEBA104787F62

while no links to download it gives you an iso name you can use to track down.
be sure to sha check to make sure no one slips in any goodies on you.

there arent that many flavors of windows from Wikipedia.
looks like we have plain windows 8 as we can make rdp but cant setup to allow others to rdp into our machines.
