[ SOLVED ] brightness going up and down by itself?

Not sure if this is a feature of asus/windows 8,
but my screen's brightens automatically heigthens and lowers all the time.

If i pay attention to it it's very noticeable,
but when I'm not paying attention it's not bothersome.

I wonder if this is normal,
or if it means there's something wrong with my unit?

    Do you have auto-brightness enabled?

This is can be found under charms bar>settings>change PC settings>PC and Devices>Power and Sleep>Brightness

You can try turning off the auto screen brightness feature.

From the charms on the right of the screen select "Settings", "Change PC Settings", "PC and devices", "Power and sleep". Then turn off "Brightness".

I think you can also do it from the control panel custom power options.

Both are great posts and solid advice in terms of settings to address the OP problem.

    Thanks!

mine did the same (I ended up returning it, but I'm regretting the decision). it wasn't autobrightness but that crappy dynamic lighting that so many monitors are doing. on a dark scene it would put he screen where I want it (I almost always have it a 0%) then on a bright scene - lotsa windows or bright website- it wouod ramp up the brightness and bother the heck out of me. I HATE this feature. it may sve battery for those that use the screen above 0, but for those like me it a freaking nuisance. most of the time the feature can't be turned off since it's in the monitor firmware.

my problem was solved with the advice here.

my first instinct was to get rid of the T100 as well, but once getting used to it...
i feel like it's the best laptop i've ever had my hands on.

compact, fast, long battery life & touchhh
    not to mention cheap

I don't understand what your saying Mad? I believe the only screen brightness settings are 1) manual adjustment, 2) auto brightness which adjusts the display based on ambient light which can be disabled and 3) the reading mode which sets the white background on some pages to a very light tan color which can also be disabled.

it some kind of dynamic scene adjustment. it makes the screen brighter in brightly lit scenes and then dims on dark scenes. it seems a lot of people don't notice it... I think on two people on xda (including me) notice it on the galaxy note 10.1 2014.

to see what I'm talking about, set the brightness to 0. it's best if you do it in a dimly lit room. set your wallpaper to black and hide all windows. then maximize a browser window on a white webpage and you'll see the screen brighten a notch. minimize it and youll see it dim again. you could try it with tabs on a light and dark website- maximized. if it doesn't then maybe there are multiple monitors used I the device.

That sounds like there's some kind content-adaptive lighting going on. Have never seen this happen on my T100, nor can I think of a setting for it existing anywhere.

I've not yet had a monitor tha you can turn it off. according to other input it's something baked into the monitoer firmware and would need to be hacked to remove the feature. I never had an official source on that though. I'm pretty sensitive to it (and to projector rainbow effects, but ive learned to stop paying attention to them.) and hate it. at least the gn101 2014 has a very slight ramp. my ativ 700t and 500t are bad too, 500t being worse.
