Would you rather....(need help deciding on old vs new T100 models)?

    Hi, all.

I'm going to be traveling for a year and have decided that the T100 is what I'll be taking (for blogging, some photo editing, surfing, streaming etc...basic stuff, not gaming or large video edits).

I'm debating between an old T100 model that is on groupon for $259 (T100TA-H1, Windows 8.1, 2G Ram, 32 SSD + 500 gb HDD, 1.2 MP camera...don't know if it comes with Office or not) and the new one on Amazon at $299 (T100HA-C4-GR, Windows 10, 4G RAM, 64 GB SSD).

    Price diff is pretty negligible.

All things considered, is there any reason to opt for the older model (besides the fact that I'll likely need to carry an external HD) over the new one?

Thanks in advance for any insight!

A few things come to mind knowing that you are traveling and using this as your internet and media device.

    1. You probably wont be limited by the hardware. I do tons of stuff I never expected to be doing on my t100 and it still surprises me.
    2. The Groupon to me doesn't seem like a killer deal at all for the following reasons:
    a) It's one of the first t100 models asus ever produced way back in 2013
    b) It's the model with a hard drive built into the keyboard which adds weight, thickness, and potential data corruption complications. Add to that the fact that you still only have 32 GB in the main tablet which complicates installing software and updates especially when you want to "stock up" on content and photo storage for your travels.

If you go for the Amazon model you will be in fantastic shape. It is more than capable of everything you are wanting to do.
My other option would be this slightly older t100 model. Amazon.com : ASUS T100 2 in 1 10.1 Inch Laptop (Intel Atom, 2 GB, 64GB SSD, Gray) - Free Upgrade to Windows 10 : Computers & Accessories

It's a little newer than the groupon one and has a slightly more capable processor which made quite a bit of difference over the previous model. It is also 64GB.

Seems like a good choice but like you said. this one is only $30 less than the brand new model that is thinner, has double the RAM and a much faster processor. Essentially $30 takes you from a device that will not only be great for your travels but will be what you want to use when you get back as well. That seems like a pretty wicked deal.

Oh, man...thanks so much for the detailed response, GTanner! Much appreciated.

Definitely sounds like the new model is the right choice. I'm going to see if they launch the 128 gb in the next few weeks and order one, either way.

That or invest in a high speed micro sd card. 64 GB is plenty for programs and easy access to lots of content. throw another 64GB UHS card in there and you're good to go.

If I was to add one thing to this advice it would be to read through the T100ha thread we have here. EG. The most recent post says Asus have pulled the model from their website, so I wouldn't wait for the 128gb if you really want that model.

Also bare in mind that the T100 is built to a budget, is not robust & will not tolerate abuse. So charge it correctly. handle it properly and don't drop it. They don't survive drops...

PLEASE Search for existing threads before posting a new one. Thanks.

Well, I'll play devils advocate here. I would ask what version of Office the Groupon one has. It appears to be new so it should have some version of Office. If it is a refurb it would not. If it is Home and Student, I still might consider it. That is about $150 there. Most come with 365 these days and you will get the first year subscription free but pay the rest of the years. If you plan to use it as a notebook, I would keep the keyboard attached most of the time. I think the problems arise when you dock and undock. The connector mechanism is just not that robust. So, the HDD in the keyboard would be a plus. If you plan to use it as a tablet, the 32 gb will be challenging but with a 128 gb SD card, it won't be that much different. The next big update will allow programs to be installed to external media. The 4 gb RAM, 64 gb eMMC and faster processor would give a better overall experience, though.
