I have a t100 and two Arduino boards both based off the UNO platform. Both work perfect with the usb port no matter what cable I use.

If you are familiar with the Arduino Platform you will know that you need the Official Arduino IDE for communication. If you already have the IDE installed then check the settings on it to choose the right board number and port. If you have no luck that way then you may need to install a special driver or reinstall the IDE. Some of the cheap non-authentic boards sold on ebay for ~$4 have a different USB controller that needs a different driver then what the IDE provides. wherever you bought the board should have documentation on setup and may provide a driver.

Let me know if you have more difficulties.

To be clear, you have it working with the USB port on the side of the tablet itself?

I am not referring to the port on the keyboard. This setup will not be able to use a keyboard/docking station.

    Thank you.

No. Sorry this thread was quite long so I skimmed it. I assume you are using an OTG adapter to convert from micro SD to full USB then using the USB to whatever size for the Arduino. If you can first get it working on the dock port you can tule out drivers as the problem. When you switch ports you may need to change the virtual port in the IDE as well. Other than that I can't think of anything else that could make it work.

It works fine on the dock port, but that's no good to me unfortunately. I may have to return and exchange for a different model/brand.

Apparently the T103 has a functional USB on the tablet side, but it's Android O/S which is not compatible with some of my software.

    ...can't win!

Perhaps some other models (such as regular surface 3, or t100 chi, or acer something rather.) have a different port controller for the side port. I'm sure there I'd a Windows tablet on the less expensive side that will work for you.

Come to think of it, I believe some of the older surface pro models (1 and 2) had full USB on the tablet itself and are being sold quite cheaply. Definitely look into that.

If you're looking for something cheap and is comparable to the T100 with a full size USB port, Micro Center carries their WinBook brand. I own an Asus T100 and purchased a WinBook TW100 and that is the one thing I like on the WinBook over the T100 is that it has a full size USB port on the tablet portion. For the price, I've been pretty happy with it.

$179 for a tablet that is comparable to the T100 32GB version, except it uses Wimboot so it has more free space than the T100. Also, pressing the Windows logo button on the TW100 actually functions and takes you to the start screen unlike the early T100's where it was just a logo. If you need a keyboard, you can purchase a separate docking keyboard/case for $50.

If you have a MicroCenter in your area, then you can visit the store and get further Open Box discounts. I purchased an open box TW100 for $89 with the additional open box keyboard/case for $40.

If you want to go even cheaper, you can get a WinBook TW700 (7in screen) for $50 which also has a full size USB port on the tablet. I purchased 4 of those and for a $50 full Windows 8.1 tablet, it works well.

and a step up from that are the 8in versions, where I also purchased a TW801 (Open Box $70). You'll want either a TW801 or TW802 because they have 2GB of RAM compared to the TW800 with 1GB.

Thanks everyone. I ended up exchanging the ASUS for an Acer Aspire Switch 10. No issues getting USB devices/data to work on the tablet
    side-port.

Right off the top, the ASUS definitely has better styling!
