    [ SOLVED ]No 8GB ROM on my T100TA-B1-MS 32GB

Note this is a Microsoft Signature Edition (hence the -MS in model).

I've read that the 32GB T100s come with a 8GB ROM for recovery, but it doesn't look like mine has it. I've only got a 20GB system partition with an 8GB recovery partition carved from the 32GB MMC
I've attached the diskpart output for the MMC.

The 8gb recovery partition is exactly the recovery. There is never a separate recovery ROM. Also yr device might also be set up with wimboot, which means its booting up directly from compressed files inside the recovery partition. So before trying really hard to make more space by deleting the recovery partition, should make sure it's not wimboot else you wont be able to boot up after deleting the recovery partition.

I,m beginning to think there has been two(?) eMMC versions of the 32GB model. The early units had a separate 8GB ROM that held the recovery and the more recent units have the 8GB recovery "carved out" of the 32GB eMMC. Then there may even be a third 32GB version using WIMBoot out of the box.

I believe there have been screen shots taken of units with the separate 8GB ROM posted some time back. If my theory is true, that goes a long way towards explaining this long standing confusion factor.

How much space was available? It would be interesting to know if using WIMBoot is enough to offset the loss of 8GB from the main drive.

This is what I was just thinking about .. While I work for an all-MS company, I've mostly been a linux/Android guy and hadn't heard of WIMBoot but that's probably what it is. I think I had 17GB free after my first power-on and that seemed reasonable, but then noticed I was only showing 20GB available in the File Explorer so I went the diskpart route to see what it had.

I'll check the disk manager later tonight to see if it's got WIMBoot.

That's the whole point of wimboot was to save space over a traditional installation. A better way to think of space usage should be space used by the recovery wimboot partition plus space used by pointer files in c: . If this is compared to a regular traditional installation, you would save anywhere around 4gb, even more if you also incorporate office in your wimboot recovery partition.

In my custom set up, win8.1 en with o2k7, acrobat reader, daemontools, mpc-hc, pdf printer, uses about 12gb if i do a normal install (without a recovery partition). with wimboot setup, total space used by pointer files in c: plus the recovery partition is around 5-6gb. So the space i save is around 6gb. On top of that, with wimboot i have a recovery partition in place already..... So I do believe that you do save some space to offset the loss. Maybe not all the way of 8gb but a fairly substantial amount.
