I've been looking at the Vivotabs. Very nice line, and the Asus reputation is a huge bonus. Given a) the price point, b) the 8 mp camera (on the 10.1 inch; she really wants a hi-res camera); and c) the ability to run Windows, I'm leaning in that direction.
Here's the fly-in-the-ointment: The thing runs on an Atom processor! Isn't that going to be pretty dang slow when running Win 8?
Still, it could be a good entry-level option. Maybe Asus will release a Vivotab upgrade with Baytrail or something faster down the road, and maybe she'll want to upgrade to that after playing around with the Vivotab.

I spent a little time with the Bamboo Paper app on my T100 and considering I'm in no way an artist... my take-away is that it's a very basic graphics tool but it does impress me with its ability to "draw" with my finger and with a stylus.

I think I'll just leave this subject to the artists.
    Rick, loving my T100TA-C1-GR Z3740 64GB Win 10

I get 8-12 hrs use per charge using SLEEP mode. Warning, NEVER calibrate the touchscreen.

To bring the discussion back full circle (and perhaps justify this thread as a T100 thread), if the T100 is serviceable at the most basic entry level to support some super simple drawing and paint apps, that would be good to know. Any tricks/tips towards making the T100 work and perhaps getting a fine point stylus to cooperate with the touch screen? I think my wife might actually appreciate it more if I got her some simple art apps to use on the T100, but put the real money towards a different gift altogether.

Thanks for the tip. My wife has been playing around with some painting/drawing on the T100. I'll def. add Bamboo Paper to the list. As a non-artist, I'm starting to get why you need something pressure sensitive, and why, hence, the T100 (along with most tabs) just doesn't cut it for real artists wanting to do real work. But some of these other apps look to be fun to tinker with--even my wife seems to think that, while they don't quite approximate the real thing for her, they are kind of cool to play around with.

If that makes sense. That's very often how I learn about things for major purchases--find something of pretty good quality but inexpensive, and then use that experience to make informed decisions about larger investments.
I'd say that the Asus VivoTab Note 8 definitely fits the bill of being "entry-level in price and functionality, but still pretty good."

    HJKeener:

    FYI:

The Vivotab Note 8 has the Wacom stylus setup-- the other Vivotabs do not.

So the Vivotab Smart 10 won't work with the Wacom stylus? If that's the case, I don't know if I'll go with the Vivotab. That doesn't take the Vivotab off the table altogether, but my wife seems to want a bit more real estate to work with if it's a device she'll use for sketching or what have you.

Still, the VT Note 8 is significantly cheaper than the Galaxy Note, and the full windows, if we could get a decent keyboard dock to go with it, would be nice in terms of enabling her to do desk-top type stuff on it when she needs/wants to. Too bad the VT Note 8 doesn't come with an LTE option. We're not in the market for a "phablet" right now, but this one looks like it would be a great phablet option (too large for most users; but I'd go for it).
