There is a free program called Macrium Reflect that can create an image and allow you to created a recovery CD/image to boot from in order to restore. Windows can actually do that natively but Macrium, imo, is better.

From what I can gather on Macrium's website, it's now a trial offer (says Free Trial).

I believe that Paragon backup & recovery can do this, it's free so you can give it a try without any downside except your time.

There's also DriveImage XML, which is free for personal use. While I haven't used it on my T100 yet (since I've only had it about five days), I have used it on my other systems and it does a good job of backing up the disk and restoring it.

Norton Ghost can do this......uhhhh wait check that. Not since EFI/UEFI supported Windows 8 came out So I said goodbye Ghost and hello to Macrium Reflect instead and Macrium works great with more options.

This is not a trial. Macrium Reflect FREE Edition - Information and download I have dozens of systems with this installed. Nearly all my servers at customer sites are using the server version as well and it's a lot less expensive than Acronis Trueimage.

couldn't the built in Windows System Image Backup do this?
control Panel > File History, at the bottom left of the window System Image Backup

By the way, does the T100 include a recovery partition?

Yes and yes. But 3rd party solutions are typically more flexible. In the case of the recovery partition, unless you also create a recover media of some kind it wouldn't help if you can't get into Windows. The difference is between a simple system backup and a disaster recovery plan.

Uhhh...a recovery partition only fails if the recovery partition itself is fragged or the repair partition is fragged. On the T100, hit F9 at boot time to get in to the recovery/repair pre-OS environment. That is what the 900MB partition on your computer is. The 8GB partition is the actual recovery partition itself.

Things have to go pretty far south for either of those partitions to not be working. Basically the drive has to be borked or you would have had to of choosen to remove the partitions yourself. In the former case, with the T100, you'll need to send it in for an RMA as the eMMC is bad. In the later case, I would have hoped you would have created a USB recovery key if you were going to remove the partitions off your device.
