It seems to take 55 minutes to copy 21GB from USB 2.0 external drive to T100

Hello readers.. title says it all. Could it be true? tried to copy 21GB worth of folders (ok lots of small files) from my passport USB 2.0 2.5" sata drive and the Asus T100 says it will take an hour... the speed reported is on average 2-3mb per second. Is this due to Win8, or some intel storage drivers missing or incomplete as yet, or just the slowness of Bay trail? on much older notebooks the same operation takes like 10 minutes.

    Thanks for any help...

[Note- only when copying small files does the speed decrease so. In big files it seems normal. Now it's showing 2 hours to complete.. ]

USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 are "like night and day" in terms of data transfer speeds.

It's for that very reason I use a USB 3.0 external drive for large data transfers.

The "lots of small files" part may have exhausted your buffers as well.

TeraCopy for Microsoft Windows - Code Sector is also much faster than the built-in windows copy function. Free version works fine for most needs.

It took me about an hour to rip 22gb from a bluray disc from an external usb 2.0 drive. I would with a hard drive would copy/transfer a bit faster

Lot of small files means random writes. The advertised transfer rates in virtually any device usually refers to sequential read/write, which usually are related to big files. When you try to copy small files, the transfer rates usually decreases proportionally to the number of files and how small they are, so yes, a 2-3 mbs is pretty much common if you're using a USB 2.0 HDD (usually within 20-30 mbs of sequential writes) to copy small files.

Just try to copy a 1-2 GB file from your T100 to the external drive. You'll probably see a significantly higher transfer speed.

As has been mentioned, USB 2.0 is MUCH slower than 3.0.

Personally, I would not use USB 2.0 for anything other than small sub 1 GB transfers on a USB key drive or something. If you're dealing with 5, 10, 20 GB, you want USB 3.0
