Cracked Screen less than 1 month -- Punt?

OK, so I ordered from Amazon got it shipped.

My son is in HS and has to either use the school issued Ipad 1 which is in terrible shape or get his own device. I didn't feel like paying the Apple tax and extensive research led me to this device.

    The things I liked:
    Windows 8.1
    MS Office included
Fairly simple to learn and play with

Square Trade is apparently not even going to try to repair the screen they'll be issuing a refund in Amazon gift card bucks. So I am stuck do I get another one of these and go buy some kind of extra protection?

I hear great things about Nexus. If anyone decided to return one of these what did you opt for? Since it's for school he had homework concerns and felt that doing papers on a Google Chromebook was not going to be kosher. But it seems like with anything else you have to buy so much extra stuff. The cost effectiveness of the device was good, it the place it cracked concerned me. It was where the Dock push button touches the screen. A hard outer shell would help with protection to but I am not sure if after a month of playing around if this is my best choice. I should just him a dang 150 refurbished XP or Win7 laptop from the repair shop. Sure it's not a touch pad. My problem with those is battery life always sucks. Not real conducive to class.

I haven't heard of too many other similar experiences, so you might want to try to return it. You can also search on here for Asus' Accidental Damage Protection.

If you still decide to return it, you should be able to get a 13-inch last-gen laptop (perhaps with Office) for around the same price you paid for this.

I might be able to take a photo tomorrow. The crack occurred right where the screen would touch the eject button if the device were compressed in a book bag. Now these book bags are heavy so if the kid dropped it down not thinking or just left it to where it was on the bottom for awhile you could see where the weight might overcome the tablet and press it in to the dock.

I actually don't know on the glass vs. plastic.

I called ASUS last night and the customer service rep said my device was not part of ADP.

Watching how my T100 folds when docked... the release button folds inward along with the docked tablet at the hinge point. The button doesn't remain sticking up towards the touchscreen. If I understand what your saying, the button cracked the screen when the tablet was closed onto the keyboard. If the tablet was docked, I think the screen cracking there is unlikely to have happened the way the mechanism works. I'd suspect the screen was cracked as you say in some other manner. The T100 is not necessarily a fragile device but it may not be the best choice for your HS son to stuff into a backpack along with books and other things. I think I'd stick with the school provided iPad1.
Sorry you're stuck with the warranty situation.
