    64bit Windows 8.1?

    Hello,

I would like to develop for WP8 on my T100 but the W8.1 is 32bit.

Did anybody have success in replacing the OS with W8.1 64bit?

I recall reading that the Intel bay trail SoC is inhibited from running in 64 bit mode. Perhaps just a driver issue, perhaps something that Intel and Microsoft have done by design to define market segments.

I read somewhere that there is 32-bit UEFI.

Thanks for your replies. [FAQ] Asus T100: Installing custom OS (android/ubuntu/*nix/Windows 7/Windows 8 x64) - xda-developers indicates that there's no way to get 64bi W8.1 running at the moment. Shame, shame...

sucks because the chip is x64 compatible. Just because the UEFI does not support 64bit.

No, it's because there's not 64bit drivers yet for Windows 8 that'll support Connected Standby... The 32bit UEFI is just really annoying and limiting but it can be worked around...

Drivers aren't the issue, the firmware won't allow you to run 64-bit code - try booting a Windows 8.1 64-bit installer.

Issue is the UEFI doesn't have 64-bit support implemented. On the Bay Trail FFRD's there was separate firmware for 64-bit support, the T100's current firmware is built off the 32-bit version, meaning it would require a new firmware built around the 64-bit enabled version. I'd be surprised if ASUS do this to be honest, I expect it'll come with Cherry Trail-T devices once they start building them with 4GB DDR3.

This mainly effects the boot loader... you can still run 64-bit OS but you have to work around the 32bit UEFI for booting... The XDA Forum working on booting Linux for example was running the 64bit Linux OS but used a 32bit boot loader to boot it on the T100...

Though, there are other issues with 32bit UEFI but when MS finally releases the 64bit drivers for Bay Trail and Windows 8 then Asus will also have to update the T100's firmware to fully take advantage of it... or provide us with a custom boot loader anyway (hopefully the former)...

The 32bit UEFI is mainly a holdover from Clover Trail, which was limited to 32bit hardware and they pretty much rushed the release of early Bay Trail products like the T100 but firmware can be updated... So they should be able to just post a update when the time comes...

The T100's continued popularity should help make that decision for them a no-brainer and they don't have anything to immediately replace the T100 as well to further suggest they will do the update... We'll see once MS officially releases the 64bit drivers, which should be relatively soon as it is due out in Q1 of this year...
