[GUIDE] Lets dismantle & mod the keyboard - tear down guide

After a week of owning a brand new transformer with 500Gb base, what do to - ah-ha, lets pull it apart.
The reason being I'm in the UK and could only source a 500Gb base with a US keyboard at a reasonable price.

So, I sourced a good condition UK keyboard (the top of the base unit) from a machine being stripped down via ebay, and got the screwdriver out.

Both keyboards for comparison - the credit card will come in useful later

Undo all the screws on the base - 2 are under the rear feet. Then get a credit card and slip it between the two halves of the case and use it to pop the clips holding it together.

Place screws and bottom piece safely aside.
Inside of base unit (subtract HDD if necessary)

Remove HDD (4 screws) and all screws on the metal plate - you'll find one hidden under the black tape, and set these aside.

Now just release the two ribbon cables from the USB board, the clamp is hinged and folds upwards, then remove both screws on the CARE this is attached to the docking port. Undo both hinge screws, one on either side and lift the mechanism complete with USB board and carefully place aside.

Remove clear plastic sticky piece that sits on the back of the keyboard under the USB board and transplant onto the new unit.

USB board and screen docking hinge

The rebuild is a reversal of the stripdown, just be careful you get all the little screws in the right holes, the boards are marked with what goes where and the sizing so isn't too hard.

It took me about 30 minutes start to finish, and now have a UK spec machine.

May I ask what IS the difference between US and UK keyboards? With just a cursory look at your first image, I don't see the difference.

The UK keyboard keeps a stiff upper key at all times, no matter the adversity

The UK keyboard has a sign on the 3 key - the US has a # sign.

But I notice these things because I'm British & therefore have a broad, expansive view of the world...

Wow! I didn't expect that accolade!

For those wondering the difference between the keyboard layouts I've put up a couple of pics.

    US Keyboard

    UK keyboard

The main differences are the lack of the sign on the US one and @ and " are reversed. My bugbear was if the US on is mapped as UK, there is no \ as it lives next to a smaller shift key. As I use network drives that was causing an issue.

Do all keyboard docks have a slot where a HDD can be added? I don't want to tear apart my keyboard dock only to be disappointed. Does anyone know?

I doubt it probably a lot of T100 owners would have already done the up grade already. I have not heard of anyone trying.

The non-drive keyboard does not have the room. End of story.
