I can run it with screen on 100%, the HDD attached, wifi on and anything else I can think of to wear it down and I get 6 hours, which would probably be reasonable. But I can also run it on 30% screen brightness in flight mode and just word processing and it's still 6 hours. I've never come across anything like this before.
Would a reset to factory help? I can't think of anything else.
It may not hurt. It seems like your last option, unless there are a bunch of driver updates you haven't done that you can try out.

It started again. Windows 8.1 update came in and it seemed to jump-start. The battery remaining is now showing 13 hours, which, while I don't believe it, is at least a change. So maybe there was something wrong with my installation of the previous 8.1

Read through some of the battery threads please. The battery wear is an estimate. A constantly moving estimate. I've seen everything from 3% to 11% wear and it is never constant. It often depends on how deeply I discharged it and how fully I charged it.

I'd consider it accurate +10% to -5%. So figure if it tells you 90% health, that it is probably actually somewhere between 85% and 100%. If it tells you 80%, then it is probably somewhere between 90% and 75%.
