Which video player to use for .mkv x264 files with lowest battery drain?

    Hi!

I am new to the T100 and this forum have given me loads of great advice and tricks to help me fix some small issues.

One issue I have is the fact that video playback of HD videos seem to use more CPU than it should if it was using hardware decoding properly. I am running VLC in desktop mode and when testing .mkv x264 it will use around 30% CPU for 720p and around 50-60% for 1080p. Any tips on any better player?

I use SMPlayer. It's a GUI built around mplayer. I've never benchmarked it. But, it's an option. Please let us know of the results if you do benchmark it.

For me SMplayer uses 22-28% CPU playing a .mkv x264 video sequence that VLC used 28-35% CPU while playing. So around 7 percentage units less. Ive heard people talk about 16% CPU usage, any other tips for players?

Some more testing showed that SMplayer used 16-26% CPU playing another clip over network. VLC used 22-34 playing the same. SMplayer seems nice.

Or re-encode to just a h264 and play using the native windows media player. Full hardware acceleration. In Anandtech testing on a Sony Viao they got around 240 minutes with VLC on an h264 720p file and about 340 minutes using the native media player. Better hardware offloading is a good thing.

If I wanted to have to bother with special solutions for my trablet I feel I could just stay with my iPad. There I run servers on my HTPC to autoconvert any video I want to download for the iPad. The whole point with a T100 would be to not have to deal with all these special solutions.

I tested running 1 hour of x264 video in SMPlayer and it used 10-11% battery, will do the same now with VLC and see what happens there.

Use Mediaplayer classic, the player that comes on the k-lite media codec. Link to the main page: Codec Guide: K-Lite Codec Pack - For XP, Vista, Windows 7 and 8. Download latest version of the megapack from here: K-Lite Mega Codec Pack Free Download and Reviews - Fileforum

Just use this settings when installing:

    Captura.JPG

This a capture of the player with a 1080p movie... less than 2% processor load. Anyway do not expect less than 10% per hour battery draining, that means 10hours of continuous use of the tablet, that's a good timing.

I can confirm what nportillo suggested works best. I tested with vlc, mpc-hc with madVR and mpc-hc k-lite pack.

On same x264 clip vlc cpu usage was 23%, mpc hc madvr was 13% and with k-lite only 3%

I almost cant believe my eyes, but its the truth.

Media player classic just like the built in Metro video app offloads a bunch of stuff, so it does reduce CPU use a lot. For MKVs, as mentioned k-lite is great.

It probably is still a hair less efficient than a straight MP4/MV4 and running it under the metro video app, but is a darned close toss-up.

Also for the re-encode, I do understand why you wouldn't want to do that. Just, if you are looking for the MOST efficient way, that would be it. MKV is great, but its portability is still a lot more limited than MP4/MV4 h.264 "raw" files. Its why I never encoded MKV containers and I've always been encoding my files in mp4 containers since when I started building my video library a couple of years ago.

Strange, I cant get it to use that little. It is less of course but its hovering around 10-12% for 720p using mpc-hc from the k-lite pack.
