Coolreader ebook reader dictionary help please

Hello there. I am a newbie to these android tablets and need some guidance on setting up my Coolreader ebook reader app for off-line dictionary reference. I have downloaded the Coolreader app, as well as the Fora dictionary app, however when using an epub book file in Coolreader I am unable to access the dictionary by touching, or holding, a word I want to look up in the text of the ebook. I am obviously not setting things up right, and I have found no reference anywhere on how to do it properly.
    Any assistance is greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

    Welcome to the forum

Rather than repeat a lot of information again, let me recommend our e-reading FAQ thread to you. It is linked from my signature, below. I understand what you are trying to do, but to be honest I am uncertain as to whether it is possible in the app you mention (CoolReader). It is possible in the Amazon Kindle app, I know.

Nevertheless, you'll find that there is at least one dictionary app (I think the FAQ mentions two in post #3) that will allow offline access - but you'll need to access it independently of any e-reading app you use. What I do outside of Kindle is to long press on the word I want to look up. Highlight it & select copy. Then go to the Merriam Webster dictionary app and paste it in there to define it.

    Hope that helps.

You can always ask the fine folks at mobileread.com forums, they know their ebooks and ebook-reading applications.

From very quick look around there, it seems you need "dictionnary files" in the .dict or .dict.dz format (both "standard" formats for dict, the latter, I think, is the same file but zip-archived) to go with the coolreader app.

    Hi:

This works great foe me. Look to the Cool Reader/FB Reader Colordict sections:

    Ebooks

I enjoy reading books on the tablet and restrict my choices to four different formats: Epub, mobi, txt and pdf. I keep some of my ebooks in my _Data\ Ebook folder , organized into subfolders such as fiction, history, literature, horror, etc. Remember the universe is 16 or 32 GB.

I go to my shortcut to _Data on my homescreen, go to the Ebook folder, select a book, go to the Open as Screen and choose an app.
For pdfs, I use the free Adobe reader or EzPdf, a much loved pdf app with many useful features beyond the requirements of reading an ebook pdf:

    Adobe Reader
    https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...m.adobe.reader

    EZPdf $3.99:
    https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...android.reader

Jota+ Editor: For text files, I use Jota+ Editor, a text app that will open large files:
    https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...dora.jota.plus

FB Reader: For mobi files, I use FBReader, an app that will open both mobi and epub files.
    FB Reader:
    https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...ary.ui.android

    FB Reader TTS Plugin
    https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...der.plugin.tts

Cool Reader: Finally I use Cool Reader for Epub files:
    https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...org.coolreader

If you want to support the developer, after installing the app above, you can donate a buck here:
    https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...onation.bronze

Cool Reader supports epub (non-DRM), fb2, doc, txt, rtf, html, chm, tcr, pdb, prc, mobi (non-DRM), pml formats.

ColorDict: Both Cool Reader and FB Reader can use Colordict to look up English definitions, synonyms, antonyms as well as many foreign language dictionaries such as Chinese, Czech, German, Japanese and Spanish. and Chinese.

Download Colordict and open the app:
    https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...bile.colordict

Open Colordict and wait for it to index its contents.

    Installing Colordict Add-on Dictionaries

You csn find the following dictionaries by either going to the following urls or by searching for ColorDict on your tablet or phone in the Play Store App. The add-on dictionaries all have the same icon, three blocks against a black background, blue stacked on red and green. You'll download each add-on dictionary, install it and then open it/ It will then copy its contents to ColorDict and then open a prompt to uninstall itself. Keep track of what you install by taking notes because as soon as you install a dictionary, it will uninstall itself, leaving no trace. At the least, install the four English add-on dictionaries and then any extra foreign language ones you might use.

    English Thesaurus Dictionary

    English Dictionary Wordnet

    English Irregular Forms Dict

    Foreign Language Dictionaries

    English <-> Czech Dictionary

    German English Dictionary

    Japanese English Dictionary

    Configuring Cool Reader

The following warning appears upon updating or installing Cool Reader:
Warning: To support fullscreen mode and dimming of softkeys on Android 3 and 4, target Android version has been changed to Android 4. In this mode legacy menu soft button is not available anymore. Without reader toolbar in reading mode you can open menu by tapping at center of screen. Long tap at center of screen shows settings dialog.. Turn on toolbar in reading mode now? (You can always change this option in Settings/Page/Toolbar) Translation: Access the toolbar and settings in an open book by a short tap for the toolbar or a long tap for settings in the center of the screen.

Open Cool Reader and then a book or the manual.
*Press the settings icon, crossed hammer and wrench, by a long press in the center of the screen.

*Press the Font Menu, AA, change the Hyphenation dictionary from Russian to English US.

*Press the Folded-Page icon, set View mode to pages, set Orientation to sensor, set Landscape pages from one page to two pages, change Background texture to Paper and change Page Animation from Slide (2 Pages) to Paperbook.

*Press the Pointing Finger Icon then check Text Selection with double tap.

*Press the far-right single page icon, set Screen backlight timeout to Use system default.

*Press the far-right single page icon, first change Screen Backlit Timeout to Use System Default, then press dictionary and choose Colordict.

*Hit the far-left back arrow which will return to either the manual or the ebook you chose. Double tapping on a word will highlight it and below you'll see a toolbar. Pressing the double screen will copy the text to the clipboard, pressing the a/z icon will bring up Colordict, hitting star will add a bookmark, hitting the envelope will prompt you to open an email app, hitting the magnifying glass icon will bring you to search and hitting x will close the toolbar. Hitting the back arrow in Colordict will return you to your reading selection.

*Hitting the far-right radial down arrow opens up an additional menu with many additional choices such as Day/Night, Go to Page, Search, Autoscroll, Read Aloud, etc.

You might not be surprised to see this kind of two page formatting, with page turning animation on an epub book but try it on a text document or a Palm book. Go back to the Menu icon, (four horizontal lines), then More, options include Night Mode, Read aloud, Autoscroll and show manual. The devs update frequently, keeping the cool in Cool Reader. You can download it for free but I recommend the $1 Bronze donation to support innovative apps.

    FB Reader:
    https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...ary.ui.android

Both Cool Reader and FBReader will open epub books, FBReader in a larger single-page format and Cool Reader in a double paginated format. Some epub illustrated books and ones with photos might open better with Cool Reader, while others might be better formatted with FBReader. This could change back-and-forth as updated versions appear. You should be able to open most ebooks using either Cool Reader or FBReader.

    Configuring FB Reader:
*Open FB Reader. Hit the Menu Icon, three squares stacked vertically, go to settings.

*Go to Color & wallpaper: set Background to Solid Color, set background color to white and Regular text to black.

*Go to Page Turning, Animation and choose Curl Animation.

*Go to Dictionary and make sure ColorDict 3 is selected for Dictionary and translator. Set Long tapping action to Long tapping selects single word, release opens dictionary.

    Using ColorDict in Cool Reader

Double-tap a word you wish to look up. This action will highlight the word and bring up a tool bar with six icons: the double-window icon copies the word to the clipboard, the a>z icon brings up the dictionaries, the star icon makes a bookmark, the envelope with a plus sign brings up email or social media, the magnifying glass will search the current book for the selected word and the X, closes the menu. For the most part, just remember to double-tap the word and then press the a>z icon to bring up the dictionary.

    Using ColorDict in FB Reader

*Long pressing any word will select the text. A toolbar will appear below. The double page icon will copy the selected text to the clipboard, the double arrow opens a menu of apps for further actions, the circular arrows will bring up ColorDict, the ribbon icon creates a bookmark while the X closes the toolbar.
