    RazorClaw

I came acrossRazorClaw in my travels:

    [Tool]Razorclaw - One click Root for all ASUS Transformers, 3G and Slider(25-12-2011) - xda-developers

It seems this nitty little darling can provide root access for rhe slider. I'm not brave enough to try it, but wondered what my learned friends on this forum thought?

It works only on the .18 and .19 firmware on Honeycomb. Any others it does not work.

I guess I have to show my ignorance and ask how one finds out what the version number of the currently installed firmware is?

Furthermore, I guess it is possible to backup the current installation so that it can be rolled back? I've done a firmware upgrade on another tablet which already had root privileges - it involved copying the new boot fies to the root of a SIM card and then installing the upgrade as the tablet booted. So no expertise but I have some familiarity with the general process.

The reason I'm considering getting root privileges is so that Titanium backup will work. It starts up but immediately complains it can't get root, and nothing else works. I've tried other backup utiities and they do the job - but they can't be scheduled because they can't get root. I'd rather my slider is backing itself up overnight rather than have to do backups manually.

Go settings/About Device at the bottom, then you should see your Firmware version.

If you are just looking to be able to back up apps, check out the ASUS app called "App Backup". It is included on the last three Honeycomb (Android 3.2.1_ firmwares, or the ICS (Android 4.X) firmware. This will back up your apps and data without root privileges.

If you do decide to Root, one way to back up the current firmware is to use ClockWorkMod recovery and do a Nandroid backup. Keep in mind that CWM recovery will break automatic updates. This will also allow you to run custom ROMs if you want to do that.

Thanks for the comments guys. All very useful and informative.

As it happens I don't need to go thru the rooting exercise. As of late yesterday My Backup Pro released an update where the scheduling is now working, without root access being available. After upgrading it did the business, plus the 10 bucks a year for 1Gb of online storage is exactly what I needed.

I know I could have used Dropbox etc for free, but 10 bucks is no big deal.
