    kindle for android

Will this ever support text to speech capability? If not is there a way around this but it will still work with amazon's e books and not be cumbersome or illegal (e.g., stripping out DRM etc.) Thanks.

    I think the answers are...
No - not while they are producing actual kindle devices &
    No

However, Cool Reader will read books to you if they are in epub format.
(Which is probably not a lot of help)

I have just successfully converted a .mobi kindle book to epub format using this site

Convert Files - Free MOBI to EPUB converter. Free online ebook converter.

Installed Cool Reader, pointed it to the converted epub book and chose Read Aloud from the menu, and it is currently reading to me

EDIT - It seems to like to repeat paragraphs over and over... need to figure this out

But doesn't that infringe the DRM part of the OPs question?

Oh, I see. The DRM in the kindle app is not 100% reliable. My good lady has a 2.1 eclair 7" tablet which she uses as an ereader. Even when the kindle books are free, they very often refuse to open on her tablet - haven't found a solution yet, except that it is a known issue under eclair. So she doesn't really use the app, cos it is no use for anything other than the free classics (which I assume don't have drm). Mind you, I tried the Kobo reader app for her today - that was totally useless! Made kindle look brilliant. Disappointing really, as amazon would be my supplier of choice for most things.

I just did a quick Google search for .mobi books and grabbed the first one I found for this test.

If you have bought the book on one device, I don't see any harm looking for a non-DRM version elsewhere so it works on her tablet too

it looks like Amazon locks you into their book format and their reader if you want the full functionality of it. I very much dislike the fact I cant resell the e-books and can't even do text to speech. I only have 3 e books for college. These might be my last.

I'm a long time Kindle user and have my current DX setting on a table unused.

The Android Kindle app sucks, it's slow and as mentioned doesn't do text to speech. I use t because I've got hundreds of books in the Amazon format. On the PC it's a bithc too, constantly locks out my books and I have to re-download all the time. I've stopped keeping them on the device and allowing them to stay in the cloud except for the current selection.

You would thing that they'd sharpen up the Kindle app since the Fire tablet was released. Does anyone know does it use the SAME Kindle app as other Android devices?

just picked up the kindle touch, a shame I have to waste $99 on another piece of hardware to do what I need these books to do.
