App to make volume even softer?

Since you are saying at night, are you talking about notifications popping up? If so, when adjusting the volume, tap the 3 sliders on the right to access the 3 volume controls. Top is normal volume, middle is notifications and the bottom one is for the Alarm Clock.

Slide the Notification volume down and I am thinking that will help.

No I'm talking about the Media Volume

EQ? Do you have one installed on your media player already? If not, have a look at Google Play. Equalizer or Music Volume EQ...I don't use them (use Jet Audio), but the same principles apply to any eq. Volume isn't just achieved by adding frequencies. Grab an eq and flatten it. (Not the preset 'flat' setting--drop them all way down till you get a level you like.) Many of them come with an output level/preamp that you can also use to cut the racket.
