A note of warning: write-once DVD's and CD's are not permanent by any means. Back in the 90's, I used to sell a custom program (still DOS--nevermind that) on write-once CD's. After 5 or 7 years? Those CD's are no longer readable. By anyone--not even the original CD writer that created it.
As I understand it, the DVD uses essentially the same chemical formula (a phase-change dye that the laser "melts" to create 1's, and leaves alone to create 0's). Over long periods of time, these discs loose their integrity--even if carefully stored.
One thing is certain: future historians won't be digging up old CDR's or DVDR's to try to discover what we did with them...
... nowadays? I use hard drives and FLASH memory to keep important, long-term backups. Hard disks are cheap enough, and if stored inside a plastic, anti-static bag, with some desiccant? They ought to be good for decades. So long as there remains an electronic gizmo that can attach to them, that is.
Anyone know how to get an MFM hard drive working under Windoze 7? (just kidding...)
My point is this: keep re-checking old archival backups, and updating them to the latest and greatest media where possible. You never know when you'll need those.
Me? I fixed my former customer's dead CD-R disk by buying an el-cheapo USB thumb drive, and sending him a fresh copy on that. It was cheaper to do it that way, than trying to resurrect how I'd created the CD-R in the first place (of almost 20 years ago, now...) Yeah, I'm a pack-rat with old backups-- and I had all my old stuff on a spare hard disk. Which, even though it was a PATA disk, still worked.....
