New Google Maps killing the tablet?

I want to ask the forum if they suffer the same experience like I do for the new Google Maps apps. I have a TF700T tablet (1GB RAM) that is still running CROMI-X 5.2.3 (so basically almost the stock Jellybean 4.2). I have rarely upgraded Google Maps--which was working fine, till one day a few months ago I decided to upgrade. And what a wrong choice I made! The new Maps version (maybe 9.6 or something like that) was a KILLER app for this aging device. Killer in the sense that it took many minutes to start, with so many ANR notices, and it basically rendered my tablet useless until I restarted/rebooted the tablet. So it is totally useless.

The new Google Maps is replete with bells and whistles--much like the powerful desktop web-based sibling in that it can edit places, find alternate routes, etc. So nice, but not designed for old Android devices with only 1GB RAM to play with.

    My question to you:

    * Has anyone experienced the same issue as me with your 4-5 year old tablets?
    * What is the latest version of Google Maps that works fine on this tablet without impairing its functionality?
